I went and saw Albert Nobbs tonight. It was one of the worst movies I've ever seen at the Robinson (translation: It was still a pretty good movie). It never really picked up. There was no rhythm in the dialogue, cinematography, or score. The costumes were very well made and appropriate, but I'm not really a fan of late-Victorian wardrobes. The movie really didn't pick up until a good 45mins in and by that time I was kind of zoned out because of what I thought of as gratuitous nudity. Nudity can very easily be implied in a movie. It's done all. the. time. It's not that difficult. I didn't think there would be that to its extent in this movie, but there it was. Which was unfortunate.
I went because this has been Glenn Close's baby for the better part of 30 years. Also, she's nominated for Best Actress for this role. Best Actress happens to be my favorite category at the Oscars. Furthermore, Janet McTeer and Mia Wasikowski are both nominated for Best Supporting Actress for their respective roles. I must say, McTeer did a really good job although I was not in the slightest bit impressed with her character. Personal preference, but great performance. Now, I love Mia Wasikowski. She's my favorite young actress (art-wise, not attractiveness-wise) in Hollywood. A bright future is ahead for her. She was in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, The Kids Are All Right, and Jane Eyre. Please see all these films, if you can. So that's what brought me to Albert Nobbs - the cast. Now that I think about it, I'm not too sure what I was expecting, but that was not it - a travesty really. Unfortunately, I have no clue who's going to win Best Actress. I've seen all the movies, but I say just hit "default" and give it to Meryl. It's been 29 years away.
PS Also, Brenda Fricker shows up in it! I was so surprised when I saw her in the opening credits. She's a great Irish actress who you probably best know as the Pigeon Lady from Home Alone 2.

1. I think this blog bordering on film review is a GREAT idea.
2. I'm downloading The Kids Are All Right as I type.
3. It's sad that you have to point out that you favor an actor based on art instead of attractiveness these days.
4. I'll leave alone the glaring contradiction in paragraph one :)
